Bull riding, barrel racing, and roping are all popular rodeo events, requiring some specialized gear.
Bull riding, In American tradition, involves a rider getting on a large bull and attempting to stay on the bucking bull for 8 seconds. The rider tightly fastens one hand to the bull with a long braided rope. He would also need a leather glove, protective vest, chaps, and spurs. A flank strap is used on the bull to encourage more bucking, making the sport even more challenging.

Barrel racing started out exclusively as a women’s rodeo event, while the men rode bulls or roped. In this event, the horse and rider attempt to properly complete a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time. For this event, lightweight saddles are preferred, along with headstalls and bits (to better control the horse) and knotted, one-piece reins (as opposed to split reins).

Roping was originally developed by cowboys on working ranches to capture or restrain calves or animals too large for one man to handle. Calf roping involves a rider mounted on his horse and a calf. Team roping has two mounted riders: The first, a “header,” ropes the front of the steer, while the second, a “heeler,” ropes the hind feet. There are a variety of ropes cowboys can use, from soft to hard, for these events.
